The CCD camera would go on to be developed by Fairchild, after poaching one of Tompsett’s collaborators, Gil Amelio, and later on by Japanese manufacturers. Amelio would describe his motivation for leaving as: “the only thing you get frustrated about at Bell Labs is that you invent everything but you can’t make anything…you can’t put anything in production, you can’t see it commercialized, you can’t see it go out into the world and…I wanted to build something.”
